The natural fiber in the leaves is harvested as a waste product and requires no resources to grow. For that reason, it is a sustainable, eco-friendly, biodegradable, inexpensive source of raw materials and provides growers with additional income from raw materials that should be discarded.

To tackle the problem of animal abuse in the fashion industry, Dr. Carmen Hijosa and the Ananas Anam materials company have found a way to use pineapple leaves to create a new material called “Pinatex. “.

Each year, about 40,000 tons of pineapple leaves are discarded globally. So Dr. Hijosa decided to use them as an alternative to using animal skin and also contribute to environmental protection.

This new material uses cellulose fibers (a major component of plant cells) extracted from the leaves of the pineapple. The cellulose fibers will be clumped together to become a fabric. These fabrics are then treated so that they can be dyed or printed.

According to Dr. Carmen Hijosa, 480 pineapple leaves will create 1m2 Pinatex fabric. This fabric is much cheaper than animal skin. Once the fibers are depleted, what’s left of the pandan leaves can be used as fertilizer.
